Luminary Memory is an interactive experience created in Unity that focuses on two main things.
Physical digital interaction
How interaction in the narrative effects the effectiveness of the narrative
In this project, my group partner and I wanted to center the story around the theme of self healing but avoid having a specific laid out narrative. We added different hints to the environment and about what it was about like the cut scenes and the matching puzzles spread throughout the space, but avoided adding any narration or specifics. The goal of this was to tell the story through the players interaction with the world and have the user emboy the character.
When looking for more unique ways of interaction with the environment and embodying the character, we decided on the inclusion of a light sensor. In the real world, when the user shines a flashlight onto the light sensor, a flashlight comes on in the digital environment and the atmosphere changes. Different things that weren't previously visible become so and different elements around the scene start to glow.
We wanted to subvert expectations on perceptions of light and dark. Speaking generally and broadly, darkness is usually perceived as bad and light is good. In our world, the daytime is drab and dull. When the flashlight is turned on and the environment becomes mostly dark, different items around the room glow and create a beautiful scene.
